According to research, 80% of what we learn comes from our eyes.   That goes for adults, children, AND babies.  Thus the importance of good vision at a very young age.  While doing research on this topic, I found a program called InfantSEE that was started by former president Carter and the American Optometric Association in 2005.  It is a no-cost health program developed to provide professional eye care for infants (between the ages of 6 months and 1 year) nationwide.

The optometrists found an overall need for concern in one out of 14 infants.  “As parents, we regularly take our children to the dentist to help prevent cavities.  Likewise, we should take our babies to the optometrist to help prevent potential eye and vision problems,” said former President Carter.

Public health experts agree that visual development is the most dramatic between 6 and 12 months of age. and early detection can prevent the threat of serious impairments.  To learn about InfantSEE, call toll-free (888) 396-EYES.

If your child is older than 12 months, you will need to find a doctor that will test a child’s eyes.  There may or may not be a charge.  This is where a grandparent or friend can enter in.  They don’t know what to give your child for baby gifts or one year gifts.  An eye exam tucked into a baby gift basket, book, or clothing item is a perfect choice!
